Meet the Artists
We are Peter and Gill White of Woburn Sands Clay. Nestled in the heart of Buckinghamshire, in the village of Woburn Sands, our studio is more than just a place to work; it is a haven of creativity where the art of crystalline ceramics comes to life. The alchemy of the crystalline glazes we make is a testament to our dedication and passion for the craft.
Since establishing our studio, we've been fortunate to have collectors of our work across the UK, Europe, Australia, and the USA. We also have regular customers in the UK and Channel Islands, for whom we create repeat orders throughout the year.
Crystalline Glazed Ceramics
Crystalline glazing is a fascinating and intricate ceramic technique that produces stunning, naturally occurring crystal patterns on ceramic surfaces. This process requires precise control of materials, firing temperatures, and cooling rates to achieve its signature effect.
Each piece begins with a specially formulated glaze containing a high percentage of zinc and silica. During firing, the kiln reaches extremely high temperatures, melting the glaze into a glass-like surface. At peak temperature, the kiln is carefully cooled at a controlled rate, allowing crystals to form and grow within the glaze. The slower the cooling, the larger and more defined the crystals become.
Because the growth of these crystals is influenced by slight variations in heat and glaze composition, every piece emerges from the kiln with a completely unique pattern. The unpredictable nature of crystalline glazes makes each creation a one-of-a-kind work of art, blending scientific precision with natural beauty.
This meticulous process results in ceramics that are both visually captivating and functionally elegant, creating the delicate balance between craftsmanship and nature’s spontaneity.
